dressCode Club

Learn how to make your own game, kickstart exciting projects, build a cool website, or even create an interactive cyber treasure hunt that will grab everyone’s attention.

Running a dressCode Club!

We provide a free online portal that introduces and engages girls in Computing Science. We have lots of free, pick-up-and-play resources, annual competitions, and creative coding challenges. Our project gallery allows dressCoders to submit their creations for the community to try out and be inspired by.

DressCoders will get to make their own games and projects through Scratch, design and code their own websites, and test their problem-solving skills with cyber security challenges. App development and Scratch Jr. are currently in the works, and we are in the process of updating all our resources.

For older pupils, we have club leader resources to help empower them to run a dressCode club. We've also collated lots of great coding websites and inspirational videos. We will also keep you posted with upcoming events that might be relevant to senior dressCode mentors.

Signing Up

Once a pupil has signed up and their account has been approved, they will get an email confirming their membership and will have full access. Club leaders can also sign up to get access to all the promotional materials and resources you'll need to run your club.

Privacy & Prizes

On sign-up, pupils can simply put their initials as we do not need their full names, and we will never share any email addresses.

If a pupil enters a competition and wins, we will contact the club leader directly, so it's important that you sign up. We send all prizes directly to your school, library, or wherever the dressCode club is being hosted. If a pupil joins and no club leader has signed up, we will contact the school directly and send the prizes to a teacher to give to the pupil.

Themed dressCode challenges

We've created over 20 themed dressCode challenges you can use with your dressCode club. You might want to let your students choose a project and work together as a group or individually, or you can pick a themed challenge for the club.

Each challenge is available in two versions: one with an animated background and one with a still image, giving your students more options for their projects. All themed challenges are available on the dresscode.club website under the Senior menu.

Once pupils have completed their themed projects, they can submit them to our gallery, they can enter them to our gallery and exclusive dressCode club competition, present them to other students, and have a celebration. Consider hosting a dressCode gallery and inviting teachers, parents, and friends to try out the projects. Only dressCode club members can enter the themed projects competition.

We will continually be adding new themed challenges. If there is one you'd love us to make, please let us know using the form below or by emailing us at support@dresscode.org.uk, and we will see what we can do.

  • dressCode’s aim is to help close the gender gap in Computing Science. We aspire to engage and inspire girls in both primary and secondary school by providing the resources and support that help create a safe, fun, and happy environment for them to explore and create through code.

  • dressCode covers a range of topics, but our primary focus is on helping pupils create projects they are passionate about. We provide resources to support their ideas, including Games Design and projects using Scratch (which can also be a story or animation), Web Design, and Cyber Security. We also have a list of other coding sites for pupils to explore, along with our themed challenges and project gallery to help inspire new ideas. We will announce any new content and updates via our social media channels and or news page.

  • No. dressCode will always be freely available to clubs and organisations!

dressCode Club FAQ’s

Getting Started

  • No. dressCode is looking for any club leader who wants to help inspire the next generation of girls into Computing Science. All our resources are set up so that pupils can work their way through each topic by themselves, but they may need a little help along the way. All resources are done by video, where pupils can pause or rewatch as many times as they need.

  • Absolutely not. dressCode is a club for girls, and any club leader can run a dressCode club and help inspire them into tech!

  • No. Girls can sign up at any time of the year.

  • As many as you like! The more, the merrier.

Signing Up & Access

  • Yes. For their safety and to comply with data protection regulations, pupils under 13 must get permission from a parent or guardian to sign up. A parent or guardian can even sign them up at home using their own email address.

Upon sign-up, all members will be asked to confirm one of the following by ticking a yes/no box: "I am 13 or older," or "I have a parent/guardian's permission to sign up."

For their general account, pupils do not need to use their real name. The only time we ever need a full name is if they enter a competition, so we can let their teacher know about any winning entries.

  • All dressCode materials are only accessible to registered users who have signed up to run a dressCode club. To gain access to the pupil portal, girls will need to create their own accounts. Once account is approved, they will get unlimited access.

  • Not to worry, when you register your pupils we will send you a spreadsheet of all your girls names and dressCode gmail accounts so you will always have a list. If you can't find this list just contact us on support@dresscode.org.uk and we'll send it over to you again.

  • If a pupil has forgotten their password, they can simply click the "Forgot Password" link on the login page and follow the steps to reset it.

  • No. dressCode is an all girls coding club.

At my school the we run three clubs; a dressCode club for girls, a coding club for boys using Scratch, Hour of Code and Code.org materials and another club that is a mixed club of boys and girls.

We have found really interesting that every year one or two girls will go to the mixed club but either that's all we get or they stop coming. However, since running an all girls dressCode club the number of girls who come along to the mixed club goes up and stays up with girls wanting to come along with their friends and keep working on their projects.

We also do run a number of annual competitions throughout the year that are open to all genders. These include our popular Christmas, Halloween, Summer of Code, and Cyber Advent Calendars. They are a great way to engage all pupils and get them excited about computing.

By registering as a dressCode club you're agreeing for it always to be a club for girls.

Events & Support

  • We are dedicated to supporting our club leaders and the dressCode community. We provide a range of resources to help you, including a list of other coding sites for pupils to explore and collated inspirational videos. We can also help with ideas for your club activities, and if you have an exceptional dressCoder or senior dressCode mentor we’d love to hear about their work and if we can help you recognise and champion them we will. Reach out at support@dresscode.org.uk

  • We work hard to get industry involved in supporting this initiative. Once registered as a dressCode club leader, we will keep you informed of any hackathons we organise that are close to your location and invite you and up to ten girls to attend.

  • Not at all. We want to encourage girls and show them what is possible. They would not be at a disadvantage if they do not have any coding experience. What we would do is ensure they are assigned a mentor who is confident and has strong coding skills. We will also keep a closer eye on your team ourselves to ensure they have all the support they need. We have had pupils who have never coded before win overall competitions!

  • Thank you! We are always looking for opportunities to collaborate or partner with dressCode to help support this grassroots non-profit. They can contact us via support@dresscode.org.uk or via social media. We look forward to hearing from them, and thank you for passing on our details.

  • We'd love to hear about it and will help if we can.

Running an event is a fantastic way to celebrate your dressCoder’s achievements, raise the dressCode club’s profile, and inspire new members to join. We are always looking for opportunities to support our clubs at a local level.

We can help by providing ideas for events, offering guidance on how to run them smoothly, and promoting your event. We can also leverage our excellent industry network to help you find guest speakers or volunteers who can inspire your pupils.

Just get in touch with us at our support@dresscode.org.uk

  • Yes. Beyond the club activities and resources, we also run a number of annual competitions throughout the year. We also encourage senior pupils to become mentors and get involved with our Hopper Awards, our Promising Software Developer Award, and our Primary Certificates. You can find out more about our awards here and competitions here.
